Congress of the Greater South (ConGreS)

Building a Third Way of Development – from the South, for Humanity

The Congress of the Greater South (ConGreS) is a momentous process in which delegates throughout the Global South and from across sectors will come together, in a series of consultations culminating with a Summit of the Greater South, to collectively contribute to a new and inclusive future for Humanity through the definition of a Third Way of Development, and the articulation of a common plan of action for its realisation.

The ConGreS is convened in alignment with the aspirations of the Universal Declaration of Balanced and Inclusive Education (UDBIE), which proclaims, in Article XV, that the “Global South […] is uniquely positioned to collectively construct and espouse a third, alternative, inclusive way of development […] founded upon the spirit of multilateralism, solidarity, and self-determination.”  Convened within the context of a rapidly changing world, the ConGreS is designed to give the Global South the collective platform to address the most fundamental questions and challenges facing Humanity.

Key objectives of the ConGreS

Engage with visionary ideas

Engage in visionary thinking to envision a Third Way of Development that prioritises human dignity, equity, solidarity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

Address global challenges

Deliberate on pressing issues, including climate change, poverty, inequality, and knowledge democratisation, to shape a comprehensive action plan.

Promote a new multilateralism

Strengthen global cooperation, forge alliances, and amplify the Global South’s voice in international decision-making.

Set a new action agenda for a Third Way

Adopt a common roadmap and collective plan of action, based upon the regional and cross-sectoral consultations, to build a Third Way of Development.

ConGreS format and outcomes

Taking place in March, April and May 2024, the ConGreS is planned as a series of three regional consultations with key stakeholders from across academia, civil society, and governments from the Global South, in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia . The cross-sectoral consultations will culminate in a five-day summit in July 2024 to consider proposals from the three consultations and adopt, by the Heads of State and Government, a collective roadmap and common plan of action for a Third Way of Development – from the South, for Humanity.
