On 2 August, The Organisation of Southern Cooperation (OSC) welcomed staff members to its 8th Book Talk Series, featuring “The Cybersecurity Playbook” by Allison Cerra. This enlightening session was led by Mr. Mubarak Haruna Adam Fadomula, Information and Cyber Security Specialist at the Department of Technological Innovation and Digitalisation Enhancement (TIDE), with Japheth Ondiek, Management Information System Lead at TIDE, as the discussant.

Allison Cerra’s The Cybersecurity Playbook offers crucial guidance on cultivating a robust security culture within organisations. The book underscores that every employee, regardless of their role, plays a vital part in maintaining the organisation’s security. Cerra’s insights are particularly relevant to OSC’s ongoing efforts to embed a culture of security at all levels.

Mubarak Haruna Adam Fadomula began by delving into the main themes of Cerra’s book, stressing the importance of ongoing education and awareness in cybersecurity. He illustrated how every staff member contributes to the organisation’s security posture through practical examples and compelling stories. Mubarak highlighted the practical steps laid out in The Cybersecurity Playbook to foster a strong security culture.

Japheth Ondiek enriched the discussion by focusing on the collaborative nature of cybersecurity. He discussed how Cerra’s principles could be integrated into OSC’s existing systems to enhance their resilience against cyber threats. Japheth’s insights highlighted the need for coordinated efforts across various departments to protect OSC’s digital assets effectively.

The conversation explored the non-technical aspects of cybersecurity, making the complex subject accessible to all attendees. This approach aligns with Cerra’s philosophy that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and not just the domain of the IT department. The session also examined the psychological and behavioural elements of cybersecurity, emphasizing the human factor in safeguarding organisational data.

Participants engaged in a lively Q&A session, raising questions that covered a wide range of topics from specific cyber threats to the implementation of security protocols in daily operations. This interactive segment brought to light the diverse challenges faced by OSC and the practical solutions offered by Cerra’s playbook.

The 8th Book Talk Series provided valuable insights into the strategic importance of a comprehensive cybersecurity approach. By incorporating the guidelines from The Cybersecurity Playbook, OSC is well-positioned to strengthen its defence mechanisms, ensuring a secure and resilient digital environment.

This event not only underscored the significance of cybersecurity within the organisation but also demonstrated OSC’s commitment to continuous improvement and learning. The discussions and insights gained from this session are set to inform future initiatives aimed at bolstering OSC’s cybersecurity framework.
