19 June 2026, Addis Ababa — The General Assembly of the Organisation of Southern Cooperation (OSC), at its 5th Extraordinary Session convened on 19 June 2026, has resolved to postpone the date for the closure of the Organisation until 30 September 2026.
This decision has been taken to ensure that outstanding Member State arrears are settled in full by no later than 31 July 2026, thereby enabling the Organisation to meet its obligations to staff, scholarship recipients, suppliers, and all other stakeholders. The extension will likewise provide adequate time for the orderly liquidation of institutional assets.
In this regard, the General Assembly has further authorised the Secretary-General to incur such expenditures as may be necessary for the export of the said assets for sale abroad.
The General Assembly took note of the progress made in archiving the OSC’s documentation, as well as the arrangements made by the Secretary-General for the preservation, following the OSC’s closure, of the digital archive in a manner accessible to the general public.
The 5th Extraordinary Session was convened at the invitation of the Secretary-General in light of continued delays in receiving outstanding financial contributions from Member States, as well as the challenges encountered in disposing of OSC assets within the six-month timeframe originally established by the General Assembly at its December 2025 session.
The General Assembly expressed its appreciation to the Secretary-General for his leadership and to the Secretariat for its commitment over the preceding months.
