The Secretary-General informed the Permanent Representatives that the OEC had fully entered into operations with the establishment of its international Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the appointment of the Secretariat’s staff and the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2022-2029 “Building the Education We Need, Shaping the Future We Want” having commenced.

He also shared the plans to inaugurate the headquarters on 18th May, to coincide with OEC Day, convene the first session of the Conference of Associate Members on 19th May, and hold the extraordinary session of the General Assembly from 27th to 30th June, 2023.

The Secretary-General also met the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, with whom they discussed areas of possible collaboration as part of the OEC’s systemic approach to balanced and inclusive education that seeks to address the fundamental root causes of exclusion and inequality.

Secretary-General Bin Mussallam also met Ms Lucy Howe Lopez, the Deputy Executive Director of Globethics, an Associate Member of the OEC. Also present was Dr Amele Ekue, the Academic Dean.

The two articulated areas of mutual collaboration, including the possibility of sharing knowledge platforms such as through the OEC’s Greater South Information System (GreSIS)—a digital platform for sharing articles, journals and books, conducting multidisciplinary endogenous research, and promoting academic and youth exchanges for students and faculty across the Global South.
