Secretary-General meets Ethiopian Minister of Education

In conclusion of his working visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Secretary-General-elect of the Organisation of Educational Cooperation (OEC), H.E. Manssour Bin Mussallam, held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Education of Ethiopia, H.E. Dr. Ing. Getahun Mekuria, at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Addis Abeba.

High on the agenda of the meeting was the process towards OEC’s operationalisation, the imminent entry into force of its Constitutive Charter, and Ethiopia’s role as a protagonist for the future development and implementation of the principles and values of the Universal Declaration of Balanced and Inclusive Education (UDBIE).

The Secretary-General-elect commended the endeavours undertaken by the Ethiopian Government to reform and strenghten its education system, its revitalisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and its development of endogenous digital databases and technologies to enhance pedagogical practice.

He also reiterated the Organisation’s role in facilitating sustainable partnerships and cooperation across the Global South, and its disposal to accompany the Ministry of Education in showcasing its best-practices to other Founding States as well as presenting it with the respective best-practices of other Founding States that are relevant to the Ethiopian context.

By the same token, the State Minister stressed that Ethiopia remains committed, as an OEC Founding State, to the implementation of balanced and inclusive education (BIE) and the creation of instruments and mechanisms of effective international solidarity-based cooperation and support for educational transformation.

The Secretary-General-elect and the State Minister expressed, in turn, their readiness to explore prospects for greater coordination between OEC and Ethiopia in the realisation of their shared aspirations for equitable, inclusive sustainable development, and enhancing complementarities in the sharing of expertise and best-practices regarding BIE.
